Chest Diseases
What is Chest Diseases?
Chest diseases are a branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases related to the lungs and respiratory tract. This field covers a wide range of diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, pneumonia and other respiratory tract diseases. Pulmonary disease specialists diagnose, treat and take the necessary precautions to prevent diseases related to the respiratory system.
Scope of Chest Diseases
- Asthma: A disease characterized by chronic inflammation and narrowing of the airways. Symptoms include cough, wheezing and shortness of breath.
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): This group of diseases, which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis, is characterized by narrowing of the airways and restriction of airflow. Cigarette smoking is the most common cause.
- Lung Cancer: A type of cancer that occurs with uncontrolled cell growth in the lungs. Smoking, exposure to asbestos and genetic factors are among the risk factors.
- Pneumonia: Inflammation caused by infection of the lung tissue. It can occur due to bacterial, viral or fungal infections.
- Tuberculosis: An infectious disease that affects the lungs, caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
- Pulmonary Embolism: A serious condition caused by a blood clot blocking the lung arteries. It causes symptoms such as sudden shortness of breath, chest pain and cough.
- Interstitial Lung Diseases: Diseases characterized by inflammation and scarring of the lung tissue and alveoli. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis falls into this group.
- Pulmonary Hypertension: A condition characterized by high blood pressure in the lung arteries. Shortness of breath, fatigue and chest pain are among the symptoms.
- Sarcoidosis: A disease in which inflammatory cell clusters called granulomas form in various organs of the body, especially in the lungs.
- Bronchiectasis: A condition characterized by abnormal widening and permanent damage to the airways. Chronic cough and sputum production are the most common symptoms.
- Sleep Apnea: A condition characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep. Snoring, daytime sleepiness and pauses in breathing during sleep are among the symptoms.
Importance of Chest Diseases
Chest diseases can cause serious health problems that affect the respiratory system and reduce the quality of life. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are critical in controlling these diseases and preventing complications. Treatment of chest diseases increases the life expectancy and quality of life of patients.
Diagnostic and Treatment Methods Used in Chest Diseases
- Spirometry: A test that measures respiratory functions. Used in the diagnosis of diseases such as asthma and COPD.
- Bronchoscopy: An endoscopic method used to view the inside of the respiratory tract and lungs and to take biopsies.
- Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): Used for detailed imaging of the lungs and rib cage.
- Pulmonary Function Tests (PFT): Tests that measure the capacity and air flow of the lungs.
- Arterial Blood Gas Analysis: Used to evaluate respiratory function by measuring blood oxygen and carbon dioxide levels.
- Sleep Studies (Polysomnography): A test used to diagnose sleep apnea and other sleep disorders.
- Chest Radiography (X-ray): A commonly used imaging method to evaluate the general condition of the lungs.
- Exercise Stress Test: Used to evaluate lung function and respiratory problems that occur during exercise.
Chest Disease Treatment Methods
- Drug Therapy: Various medications are used, such as bronchodilators that widen the airways, corticosteroids that reduce inflammation, antibiotics and antituberculosis drugs.
- Oxygen Therapy: Oxygen support is given to increase blood oxygen levels. It is especially used in diseases such as COPD and pulmonary hypertension.
- Pulmonary Rehabilitation: Physical therapy and exercise programs aimed at strengthening respiratory muscles, increasing exercise capacity and improving quality of life.
- Surgical Interventions: Surgical intervention may be required in cases such as lung cancer, bronchiectasis and some interstitial lung diseases.
- Sleep Apnea Treatment: Sleep apnea is treated using continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices and oral appliances.
- Vaccines: Vaccination is recommended to protect against respiratory infections such as flu and pneumonia.
