Cardiology
What is Cardiology?
Cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of heart and circulatory system diseases. Cardiologists diagnose, treat and specialize in the management of heart diseases. Cardiology covers a wide range of conditions including heart failure, coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, hypertension and congenital heart diseases.
Scope of Cardiology
- Coronary Artery Disease: Occurs as a result of narrowing or blockage of the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle. It leads to conditions such as angina pectoris (chest pain) and myocardial infarction (heart attack).
- Heart Failure: A condition in which the heart cannot pump enough blood. It causes symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue and edema.
- Arrhythmias: Heart rhythm disorders. There are various types such as atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia and bradycardia.
- Hypertension: High blood pressure. When not controlled, it increases the risk of heart disease, kidney disease and stroke.
- Cardiomyopathy: Structural and functional disorders of the heart muscle. There are types such as dilated cardiomyopathy, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and restrictive cardiomyopathy.
- Heart Valve Diseases: A condition in which the heart valves narrow (stenosis) or leak (insufficiency). There are types such as mitral valve prolapse, aortic stenosis and mitral insufficiency.
- Congenital Heart Diseases: Abnormalities in the heart structure that are present from birth. There are types such as atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect and tetralogy of Fallot.
- Pericarditis and Myocarditis: Inflammation of the outer lining of the heart (pericardium) or the heart muscle (myocardium).
- Pulmonary Hypertension: A condition characterized by high blood pressure in the lung arteries. It causes symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue and chest pain.
Importance of Cardiology
Heart and circulatory system diseases are among the most common causes of death worldwide. Cardiology aims to increase the life expectancy and quality of life of patients with early diagnosis, effective treatment and management of these diseases. Cardiologists use various methods such as lifestyle changes, drug therapy and surgical interventions to protect the heart health of patients.
Diagnostic and Treatment Methods Used in Cardiology
- Electrocardiography (ECG): Measures the electrical activity of the heart and detects rhythm disorders.
- Echocardiography (ECHO): Evaluates the structure and function of the heart using ultrasound.
- Holter Monitoring: Provides monitoring of the heart rhythm for 24-48 hours.
- Stress Test: Evaluates the performance and blood flow of the heart during exercise.
- Angiography: Used to visualize the coronary arteries and detect narrowing.
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT): Used for detailed imaging of the heart and blood vessels.
- Nuclear Cardiology: Evaluates the blood flow and function of the heart muscle using radioactive isotopes.
- Electrophysiological Studies: An invasive test used for detailed evaluation of heart rhythm disorders.
Cardiology Treatment Methods
- Drug Therapy: Various drugs are used, such as antihypertensives, antiarrhythmics, anticoagulants, statins, and beta blockers.
- Angioplasty and Stenting: Balloon dilation of narrowed or blocked coronary arteries and placement of stents.
- Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG): Surgical intervention to bypass blocked coronary arteries.
- Pacemaker and ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator): Implantation of devices to regulate heart rhythm disorders.
- Ablation Therapy: Catheter ablation is used to eliminate abnormal electrical pathways.
- Heart Valve Surgery: Valve repair or replacement.
- Cardiac Rehabilitation: Exercise and education programs that support the recovery process of heart patients.

Questions About Cardiology
Symptoms of coronary artery disease include chest pain (angina), shortness of breath, jaw or arm pain, and fatigue. Treatment includes lifestyle changes, medication, angioplasty and stenting or bypass surgery.
Heart failure is treated with diet and fluid restrictions, medication (diuretics, ACE inhibitors, beta blockers), device therapies (ICD, pacemaker), and in advanced cases, heart transplant.
Symptoms of arrhythmia include palpitations, irregular heartbeats, dizziness, fainting, and shortness of breath. Treatment includes antiarrhythmic medications, catheter ablation, pacemaker or ICD implantation.
Hypertension is managed with lifestyle changes (diet, exercise, smoking cessation), antihypertensive medications, and regular blood pressure monitoring.
Depending on the severity of symptoms and the degree of valve damage, heart valve diseases are treated with medication, valve repair, or valve replacement.
